 What's NEW, May 2001-->testo Italiano

   On the night of the 5 April this year Fidalma Lisio died at her villa in Rapallo. She was the only child of Giuseppe Lisio, and inherited the textile company which he had founded in 1906 with the aim of reviving the splendours of Italian Renaissance textiles. After her father's death in 1943, Fidalma Lisio took on the demanding task of preserving the weaving techniques and knowledge acquired during his life. At that time, and especially during the Sixties and Seventies hand-woven luxurious fabrics were out of fashion: plastic, practical styles and simple clean designs or folk and ethnic fashions were all the rage. These encouraged the use of less sophisticated hand work with powerful effects of colour and texture. Fidalma therefore divided the business into a number of companies, which still survive, with independent administrations but united under the same name: the splendid shops in Rome, Milan and Florence; the business which still produces, though now industrially, fine furnishing fabrics; and of course the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio, which, with its fine old equipment, still continues to produce hand- woven velvets and brocades. Fidalma gave her constant support and encouragement to the Fondazione, for which she always displayed a special interest

   La Fondazione has become a member of the
C.I.E.T.A.

   La Fondazione took part in the V Seminario Tecnico sulle sete bizarre, a seminar on exotic silks, held in Brindisi and Lecce from 9 to 12 May. The other seminars (and the first two were also organised by the Fondazione) were held in Savona, Palermo, Lyons, Madrid. The first results of these studies will probably by announced in the forthcoming CIETA, to be held in Lyons at the end of September.

Christine Bishop, (in the photo) an embroiderer from Adelaide, Australia, came to the Fondazione for an individual course on needlepoint lace. She was taught the history and techniques of lace-making by the teacher at the Fondazione, Thessy Schoenholzer Nichols. (in the photo: Christine with her diploma)
