DESIGN
OF HAND-MADE AND MACHINE-MADE LACE
70-hour course
Teacher: Thessy Schoenholzer Nichols
Teaching of the basic stitches used in bobbin lace, starting
with four threads and progressing to more complex designs. Techniques
used to create brides, picot and the filling of the openwork.
Creation of individual projects, expoiting the infinite interlacing
possibilities inspired by the study of old and modern lace; conversion
of designs for machine-made lace.
* The course is aimed at machine-made lace and embroidery designers
and at textile artists who would like to enrich their knowledge
of lace-making.

I - Bobbin lace
Bobbin lace: with braids of continuous
thread; with continuous or additional tapes; à pièces
rapportées; with different grounds; with continuous
threads.
II - Needlepoint lace,
laces of varied techniques
Needlepoint lace: various techniques.
The making of lace from the picage to joining. Mixed laces: needle
and bobbin. Other techniques: filet, macramé, tatting,
crotchet etc.
III - Machine-made
lace
Hosiery frame/loom, for horizontal and vertical knits;
Raschel, Bobbin net, Cornely, Bonnaz, Leaver, Barmen, hand-operated
embroidery machine, Schiffli, Multihead; perforated, cut and
chemical lace; lace fabrics, frame for Nottingham curtain lace.
* The courses are aimed at students and those involved
in textile restoration as well as at all those in the production
and trade of textiles.
