Kente Weaving on the African loom
of the EweTeacher: Luciano (Kwame) Ghersi 40-hour course This African loom has a unique system of heddles and pedals which permit very quick weaving and, more importantly, harmonise the movements of the hands and feet. The weaver does not work out the design with his hands but dances (with both his hands and feet) with the loom. The fabric therefore bears the imprint of these creative steps and the weaving reflects musical rhythm more than graphic design. (More info: http://www.hypertextile.net/AFEVO) Theory: history and culture of the "Kete" cloth and of the Ewe people. Samples, pictures and original documents, in collaboration with the Blakhud Museum of Klikor, Ghana (http://www.hypertextile.net/BLAKHUD). Practice: every student has access to an (authentic Ewe) pedal loom and the chance to go through the whole weaving procedure: warping and threading, simple, patterned and brocaded weft. * The course is open to everybody. Weaving is done with bare feet. |
